The WalkTop Treadmill Desk: Five Years Later
As you all know, a LOT can happen in five years. In Ron Bettin’s case, he went from an MBA student recovering from a back injury to inventor of the WalkTop and President and CEO of his own company – that’s quite the transformation!
As such, this year marks the fifth year that the WalkTop has been on the market, and we’re so excited to celebrate this huge milestone. In order to fully appreciate where we are now, we thought we’d take a look back over the past five years to see just how far we’ve come. We sat down with Ron to hear how the company has grown, what some of his favorite moments have been thus far, and what we can expect from WalkTop moving forward.
Q: Can you give a brief description of how the company started out.
WalkTop began as an MBA project to turn the DIY Treadmill Desk that I had invented into a commercial product. Together with Laurel Walzak and Devon Bolton, we started a company and took the WalkTop from an idea, through design and manufacturing and finally to market. It was quite an exciting whirlwind! (To read the full WalkTop story on how the idea came to fruition and was brought through these stages, click here).
Q: What has changed for WalkTop in the last five years?
The WalkTop has improved over the years based on great feedback from owners, which we always really appreciate. It’s so valuable to hear feedback from actual users so that we can do everything we can to make their experience the best it can be. That said, we are happy to report that the original design that our customers loved has remained basically the same over the years. The patented WalkTop continues to be the only adjustable desk that attaches to a majority of popular treadmills on the market.
Q: What have you learned over the past five years?
We have learned a lot from our customers about the benefits of the WalkTop Treadmill Desk, whether that means more energy, less stress, greater productivity or stronger muscles. While some of these effects were known to us before bringing the product to market, others were more surprising, and it was really great to see the unique benefits that different clients experienced depending on their previous lifestyle. The ability to integrate movement into everyday tasks has been life-changing for people that have jobs that require them to sit at their desk computer all day or had sedentary lifestyles outside of work.
Q: What are some of your favorite moments in company history these past five years?
As I hinted at, my favorite moments are hearing personal stories from customers who have benefited from the WalkTop. One story that stands out for me is of an office worker that was on disability leave due to back issues but was able to return to work from home using the WalkTop as she found relief when walking slowly and not sitting. Amazing!
Q: Any final thoughts on where WalkTop is headed moving forward?
The WalkTop will continue to be a premier product for us. In the next few years, we hope to design new products that add more movement into everyday life.
Thanks for joining us on the journey so far - we can't wait to see what the next five years will bring!
