5 Ways to Make Walking More Enjoyable

By now, most of us are aware of the many incredible health benefits that walking has to offer. It can help with weight loss, improve both your mood and sleep quality, and reduce the risk of many chronic illnesses. That being said, walking is clearly a good idea to implement, so what’s holding you back?

Sometimes we don’t like to form new habits even if they’re better for us overall, simply because we don’t think we’ll enjoy doing them. Maybe you feel like walking would be boring or wouldn’t excite you as much as some of your other hobbies.

But don’t fear! Walking can be just as fun as any other activity, and we’ll tell you how. Here are five ways to make walking a more enjoyable activity:

Walk with a Friend

While walking alone can be a great way to clear your thoughts, walking with a friend is way more fun! Because walking is a low impact exercise and won’t get you too out of breath, it’s the perfect way to be able to catch up with someone close to you while still being active. Walking with others can even be implemented in the workplace; next time you have to discuss strategy, try a walking meeting rather than sitting around a big conference table for hours. This will get you and your colleagues moving and will also help to get your creative juices flowing.

Walk with Music

Everyone knows that having the right soundtrack can make all the difference. Next time you want to head out for a walk, pop in those earphones and play some music that really gets you going. Before you know it, your feet will be moving along with the beat and you’ll feel much more motivated to keep going. If you’re looking for a good walking playlist, try checking out some of the themed playlists on Spotify like “Powerwalk!” or “Run Wild.”

Make your Phone Calls

Walking can be a great opportunity to make any phone calls that you might be behind on. Rather than focussing on your feet or being bored by walking, get engrossed in a phone conversation with a family member you haven’t seen for a while. If you’re at work, the WalkTop Treadmill Desk is perfect for making business calls on. You can take any notes you might have on the desktop, keep up with your tasks and get your activity in all at the same time.

Set Goals and Rewards

Walking is always more enjoyable when you’re working towards something. Set an objective for 10,000 steps per day so that you have an end goal in mind and can feel accomplished once you get there. When you reach your goal, treat yourself! It can be something as small as telling yourself that if you walk a certain distance, you can have that next cup of coffee. This incentivizes the habit of walking and will keep you motivated to continue putting in steps. If you’re really into the data tracking side of goal setting, invest in an activity tracker that captures that information so you can follow your progress over time.

Walk for a Cause

If you want to get in the habit of walking anyways, why not do it in support of a worthy cause? Walking for a reason that is close to your heart will motivate you that much more, and you’ll have more fun doing it because you know that you’re making a difference. Take a look at the walkathons in your area and join in; if you’re not sure where to start, try looking into the American Cancer Society Relay for Life or the American Heart Association Heart Walk.

Walking is a great habit to start for so many different reasons, so take the necessary steps to make it fun too! Get out there and enjoy yourself while making health a priority.
